Historical Tour of the Westman Islands
This tour takes you from Reykjavík to the volcano island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands archipelago.
In Heimaey you’ll be taken on a guided coach tour of the island, where you will witness a volcanic crater, still-warm lava and half-buried houses from the island’s infamous 1973 volcanic eruption. You will spot some of the most interesting features of the island, where nature has sculpted a fascinating landscape teeming with diverse bird and animal life, including the world´s largest puffin colony.
Optional boat tour around the island
The boat circles the island of Heimaey, halting at places of interest where passengers can see various caves, witness the bird life, and likely observe whales. The trip ends by sailing into Klettshellir (Cliff Cave). A musical instrument is played to showcase the cave’s stunning acoustics, creating a sensational experience. From there we re-enter the harbour.
The boat tour is available during summer, takes approximately 1.5 hours and costs an extra €30.
Tour option one: Return flight to the Westman Islands and a guided coach tour
Departing from Reykjavík with a 20-minute flight to the Westman Islands. After exploring the island for almost a day you will enjoy another short flight back to Reykjavík in the afternoon.

Tour option two: Bus and a ferry to the Westman Islands, guided coach tour and a flight back to Reykjavík
Join a bus in Reykjavík that takes you via the south of Iceland, to the harbour of Landeyjahöfn. Take the ferry and enjoy 30 minutes of sailing to the Westman Islands. When you have explored for almost a day you will enjoy a 20-minute flight back to Reykjavík in the afternoon.
