Raft and Ride
A river-rafting and horseback riding experience that will long be a memory to remember.
After
landing, we head for the stables at Varmahlíd, mount up and ride for an
hour in Skagafjördur, a region best known for its horses, horsemanship and
great riding trails.
Then we drive to the river’s edge and shove off in rafts. There is a rush of excitement as we glide through the river. It is invigorating. Smiles of determination turn to laughter as our raft successfully manoeuvres among the rippling current. The paddle captain calls out instructions and we respond, paddling through holes, eddies, narrow channels, currents and scenic backdrops. And during the peaceful calms, we just settle back and soak up those landscapes. The lovely Jökulsá River has its own special wilderness, embedded in winding valleys, steep cliffs, green pastures and canyons. Moreover, looking at land from the water, any water, puts daily life in an interesting new perspective.
Helmets, dry suits, flotation jackets and confident professional guides take the edge off any worries – any doubts that may have entered our thoughts during the Eagle Air flight to Saudárkrókur and drive to the river’s edge.
After
the run is over, we put ashore, dry off and enjoy a good lunch before going
to the swimming pool and hot pots at nearby Varmahlíd. Relaxing in geothermal
water soothes and refreshes activity-tired muscles. Then we head back to the
airport for the return flight to Reykjavík.
Don’t forget! Please bring good, warm clothing to wear under the “dry suit“ – and an extra set to put on after the rafting tour.
